I heard a big boom the other day, but when I ran out the top was in the clouds so I couldn’t tell if it was from the volcano or something else. Perhaps the volcano is not as sleepy as people think? Those of us that live in La Fortuna loved when it had its daily eruptions, usually four or five times per day. The volcano has been clear most days this week and you can see the steady stream of smoke and hot gases coming out of the tip. Does this mean a big eruption is coming? Hillary Clinton sends her first tweet

first_imgHer Twitter followers signed up fast, almost 1,000 of them a minute, to see what she had to say. And Hillary Clinton, debuting on the social-media site Monday with a biography identifying her as a “hair icon, pantsuit aficionado, glass ceiling cracker,” kept them guessing. The end of her bio read: “TBD…”To be determined.Perhaps no figure in U.S. political life has surfaced on Twitter quite the way Clinton did. But none share her position in the public arena right now as a potential president-in-waiting. Everything the former secretary of state does now is met with anticipation and parsed for clues that might answer the question: Will she or won’t she run?“She’s news incarnate,” gushed Paul Begala, a former adviser to ex-U.S. President Bill Clinton. This seems to be how the next year or so will go for Hillary — she’s known worldwide as just Hillary — as she carves out a new public role and begins to contemplate campaigning for president in 2016.Clinton’s emergence on social media comes a few days before she is set to deliver a major public address at the Clinton Global Initiative in Chicago, offering her thoughts on domestic policies for the first time since her unsuccessful White House bid in 2008.Clinton has been busy writing a book and setting up an office at the recently renamed Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, where she is developing a philanthropic agenda of her own.Her debut also coincided with a new Gallup survey finding that her favorability had dropped to 58 percent, her lowest level in the pollsters’ ratings since 2009. The decline was driven largely by a shift in support among independent voters. One factor could be the recent Republican-led attacks on her handling of last September’s terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya — an issue likely to dog her should she run for president. With her emergence on Twitter, Clinton tried to stake out turf above all that. She is defining herself not as a staid politician but instead as a witty, self-effacing and almost hip netizen. That’s saying something for a 65-year-old who came of age when Beatles and Elvis records (the vinyl kind) were all the rage.Clinton’s avatar is a black-and-white photograph of steely, globe-trotting Hillary on a military plane wearing dark sunglasses and reading her BlackBerry. The picture was popularized on a Tumblr site in which users imagined “Texts From Hillary.”Her bio reads: “Wife, mom, lawyer, women & kids advocate, FLOAR, FLOTUS, US Senator, SecState, author, dog owner, hair icon, pantsuit aficionado, glass ceiling cracker, TBD…”“I think it’s hilarious,” said Mo Elleithee, who was a spokesman on Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign.“Twitter is not a dry medium; it is not a place to be boring,” Elleithee added. “The fact that she embraced the whole ‘Texts From Hillary’ phenomenon, the fact that she pokes fun at those who poke fun at her in her bio, it shows that she gets this modern era of communications and is going to use that to help say whatever it is that she wants to say.”In her first tweet, Clinton mentioned the two men who created the “Texts From Hillary” meme — Adam Smith and Tracy Lambe — and even used a hashtag, which is Twitter-speak for a trendy topic. She tweeted: “Thanks for the inspiration @ASmith83 & @Sllambe — I’ll take it from here… #tweetsfromhillary.”Clinton got help orchestrating her Twitter arrival from two young former aides, Katie Dowd, a former social-media adviser at the State Department who now works at the White House, and Katie Stanton, a veteran of the Obama campaign’s digital team who later worked for Clinton at State and now is at Twitter.Twitter will afford Clinton, as it does President Barack Obama, an opportunity to shape the news and communicate directly with voters. Kevin Madden, a Republican strategist and former adviser to 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney, recalled that the White House influenced the news for several days in February simply by tweeting a photograph of Obama shooting skeet at Camp David.“Political figures that use Twitter the best position themselves as managing editors of their own political news cycle,” Madden said. “They chose the headline, the image and the lede of their own news story, and the White House has been Exhibit A for that.”Whether Clinton decides to run for president again or not, she has already gained attention on a powerful new media platform. Just five hours after firing off her first tweet, she had more than 200,000 followers — well over the totals of Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (40,000) and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (85,000), two younger-generation Democrats who have been on Twitter for years and are eyeing presidential runs of their own.“There’s a great hunger of people to know not only what she thinks about policy, but her opinion on everything related to pop culture,” Madden said. “That’s where the power of social media lies for her — and it gives her a sizable advantage over many of her opponents.”Clinton got a warm reception from the Twitterverse. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey welcomed her, tweeting to his 2.3 million followers, “I love this bio!”So did rocker Tommy Lee (“Welcome to Tweeeeeeeeter Hillary!”), talk show host Larry King (“I’ll be following you — hope you follow me”), actor Ben Affleck (“I’m looking forward to following @HillaryClinton and the #TBD”), and billionaire investor Warren Buffett (“Happy to welcome one of my favorite women in the world to twitter. #45”).So far, Clinton is only following five accounts — those of her husband and daughter, as well as the Clinton Foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative and the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service. Chelsea Clinton tweeted, “Welcome Mom!”The 42nd president, meanwhile — who joined Twitter in April after public prodding by comedian Stephen Colbert — sent a message of his own: “Does @Twitter have a family share plan?”© 2013, The Washington Post Facebook Comments No related posts.last_img read more

Candidates spar at first presidential debate in Costa Ricas 2014 campaign

first_imgSolís and Piza both said the quality of leadership was key to addressing corruption. The PAC candidate said that it was not the law that needed reforming so much as the example set by politicians and public employees.Every other candidate agreed that citizens should be more involved in keeping the government transparent and fair, but there were few details about how such public oversight would work in practice. Guevara, Solís and Villalta echoed similar proposals.Rising inequality and stagnant poverty rates have dogged Costa Rica in recent years. The country’s poverty rate remains at 20 percent and upwards of 40 percent for children, despite expanded spending on social programs.Piza and Guevara both agreed that there were too many people on the government dole who didn’t need financial support, and the Libertarian candidate went so far as to suggest that the rolls of those on public assistance should be published and easily accessible online.Villalta criticized the neoliberal trend in government as a “factory of poverty” that misplaces its trust in privatization, while Guevara and Piza said that economic growth was the greatest guarantor of human development.Addressing poverty and inequality transitioned into fortifying public education and restarting the domestic economy. Solís pointed out that strong public education in the 19th century helped give Costa Rica a leg up on other countries in the region and that it was unacceptable that recent budget proposals would consider cutting funds for higher education.Solís, Araya and Corrales focused on the need for an expanded role of development banks that focus on extending credit to small and medium-sized businesses.Villalta and Solís added that there needs to be more support for poor, working mothers to be able to finish their schooling, namely through public daycare. When Guevara said that he wanted Costa Rica’s higher education system to tailor itself to the needs of the economy as a mechanism to create jobs, other candidates bristled at the idea of interference with the autonomy of the country’s universities.“I believe that the end of education is happiness, not money,” opined Corrales to cheers from the audience. The environment ended up being one topic that most candidates saw eye to eye on. Every candidate acknowledged climate change as a reality and focused on moving the country away from fossil fuel consumption.Guevara was the only candidate to mention exploring for natural gas in Costa Rica as a cleaner fuel source for public transportation vehicles during his allotted time, but Araya had previously expressed his support for the hydrocarbon.According to the CIEP poll results, Araya leads the pack with 24.6 percent, followed by Guevara and Villalta at 9.9 and 9.7 percent, respectively, while Solís (4.2 percent) and Piza (3 percent) trail behind. Corrales was listed in the 1.3 percent of voters who supported other candidates. Forty-seven percent of Ticos said that they were still undecided on how they would vote in the Feb. 2, 2014 election.    Facebook Comments In a marathon debate that lasted more than four hours, Costa Rica’s presidential candidates met face to face for the first time to convince Ticos that they are the right choice to lead the country. While frontrunner National Liberation Party (PLN) candidate Johnny Araya remained aloof for much of the debate, second place contenders Otto Guevara of the Libertarian Movement Party (ML), and José María Villalta of the Broad Front Party (FA) drove the debate.Experts from the National University in Heredia crafted questions for the six candidates, Johnny Araya, José Miguel Corrales (PN), Otto Guevara, Rodolfo Piza (PUSC), Luis Guillermo Solís (PAC) and José María Villalta, ranging from corruption, poverty, employment, education and the environment.Guevara and Villalta, tied for second place in the latest poll from the University of Costa Rica’s Center for Political Studies and Investigation (CIEP), offered radically different visions for the country. Their distinct platforms and ability to wax about the debate’s topics kept viewers attention in an otherwise crowded presidential field. Compared to the moderate PLN, the next two contenders are by far the most ideologically driven candidates, albeit from different ends of the political spectrum. On the subject of corruption, the libertarian trumpeted his slogan, “Donde hay permiso, hay chorizo,” where there is regulation, there is graft, attributing “excessive” government regulation as one of the main generators of corruption in the government. But Villalta shot back, asking why it was that only government officials were being held accountable when private businesses make up the other half of the same coin.Araya returned to the PLN’s need to re-establish its legitimacy as the representative of the people’s interests as Liberation approaches the end of eight consecutive years at the helm of the government. Araya said “citizens need to be brought into the government,” and offered a citizen oversight board for public spending and public works projects as one way to improve transparency and accountability. Officials said that Burgues, a native of Spain, would take a cut of the ₡70,000 that women charged clients at his hotel bar. Although prostitution is legal in Costa Rica, pimping is not.During the 2 a.m. raid on the establishment located just off Calle Vieja between Escazú and Santa Ana, authorities found five apparent prostitutes, including one Nicaraguan girl under the age of 16.Although it is legal to have consensual sex with a girl as young as 15 in Costa Rica, it is illegal to solicit a prostitute who is under 18 years old, according to a lawyer who was consulted by The Tico Times.OIJ officials also found the two young daughters of Burgues sleeping in a bedroom at the hotel, as well as four minors who were children of the bar’s waitstaff. The joint statement from the ministries added that the two entities will continue supervising the implementation of the relocation order to ensure it is carried out.The zoo declined to comment on the ruling.See also: Impending San José zoo closures spark court battles, celebrations in Costa Rica Facebook Commentslast_img read more

The Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT) is also partnering with the Red Cross to place lifeguards this year at Manuel Antonio Beach and Ballena Beach in Puntarenas province, and at Cocles-Manzanillo Beach in Limón, Casa Presidencial announced.ICT hopes the multi-year investment, in addition to partnerships with local governments and the private sector, will lead to permanent establishment of lifeguards across the country.“Allocating a greater amount of resources for a lifeguard program will improve the response capacity to address the different incidents involving bathers, actions that directly affect the international image of Costa Rica as a safe tourist destination,” said María Amalia Revelo, the Minister of Tourism. In 2018, 129 people drowned in Costa Rica, according to Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ). Of those, 54 drowned in a river and 51 in the ocean. Applications for US jobless aid fall to low level of 281000

Applications have been below 300,000 since March.“After 18 straight weeks below 300,000, it’s clear that the trend in layoffs is very low indeed, close to all-time lows when adjusted for the rising population over time,” Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said in a note to clients. The total number of people receiving aid dropped 112,000 last week to 2.22 million. That’s 13 percent lower than a year ago. Many people receiving benefits have used up all their aid, though some have likely found jobs. With layoffs low, employers are also hiring more to meet greater demand for their goods and services. The economy added 223,000 jobs in June, and the unemployment rate fell to a seven-year low of 5.3 percent.Still, there were signs of lingering weakness in the job market. The unemployment rate fell mostly because many of the unemployed stopped looking for work, rather than found jobs. The proportion of Americans working or looking for work fell to a 38-year low.Average hourly pay was also unchanged in June from the previous month. Pay has risen at roughly a 2 percent annual pace since the recession ended in 2009, below the 3.5 percent typical in a healthy economy. (AP Photo/Alan Diaz) WASHINGTON (AP) — Fewer people sought U.S. unemployment benefits last week as employers remain confident enough in the economy to hold onto their staffs. The Labor Department said Thursday that the number of applications for weekly unemployment aid fell 15,000 to 281,000. The four-week average, a less volatile figure, rose 3,250 to 282,500. Both figures remain below 300,000, a very low level historically that points to a solid job market. That sluggish wage growth could be holding back consumer spending and weighing on the economy. Sales at retailers and restaurants fell last month, the government said earlier this week, a sign Americans are still reluctant to spend freely.Yet home sales have picked up and Americans are buying more cars. Analysts expect the economy will expand at about a 2.5 percent annual rate in the second quarter, after contracting 0.2 percent in the first three months of the year.Copyright © The Associated Press. New DJ business structure reports growth

first_imgSource = e-Travel Blackboard: N.J In a bid to secure more foreign ownership, Virgin Australia has announced a new proposed business structure that will see its international airlines operate under an unlisted entity.Unveiled today, Virgin Australia International Holding (VAIH) will not disrupt the airline on an operational perspective and will not divide the carrier’s international and domestic business but will allow the airline to work outside of the Air Navigation Act, which limits foreign ownership of Australian international airlines to 49 percent. The carrier said the move will “improve the liquidity of VAH [Virgin Australia] and in turn enhance shareholder value”.“Foreign ownership has traditionally been well below cap, however over the past 12 months it has been sitting only marginally below 49 percent and therefore Virgin Australia has been evaluating options to ensure ongoing compliance,” the carrier said. Meanwhile rebranding the carrier mid-last year has helped the carrier draw in a 118 percent increase in net profit after tax (NPAT) for the six months ending 31 December last year compared the corresponding period 2012.  Virgin noted that its NPAT shot up to $51.8 million from $23.8 million during the prior period while its underlying net profit before tax was up 34.4 percent to $96.1 million from $71.5 million. It’s passenger load for the six months that saw Qantas’ entire fleet grounding, increased by 0.7 points to 81 percent while its revenue per passenger kilometer escalated by 6.2 percent to 16 billion.Chief executive John Borghetti cited growth to “seamless, first-rate experience”, its reposition strategy and noted that its crew and training were key to ongoing progress.“While we have continued to see high fuel prices and an uncertain economic environment, the Game Change Program strategy has helped us to improve earnings stability and achieve growth during this half,” Mr Borghetti said.He said that across the Group its domestic product had picked up 11.5 percent while since fare restructuring in May last year the company’s yield grew 13.7 percent. “Key to this success has been the ability of our team to embrace and drive the program of change and innovation,” he added.Looking ahead, the airline’s head said he is expecting to deliver “strong underlying results” for the first half of 2012 as well as an improvement in underlying performance.last_img read more
